Dutch researchers scoured the health records of 345,000 people, comparing their health status to the amount of green space in the surrounding area, from a half-mile to 2-mile radius. (NEWSER) - California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill banning the open carrying of handguns in public, he announced today. Police had opposed existing rules allowing Californians to carry unloaded guns openly, saying the practice scared onlookers, Politico reports. "As law enforcement officials tell me, it’s not safe and someone is going to get hurt," said the assemblyman who introduced the bill. Added Brown: "I listened to the California police chiefs." More»

CDC even reports one death over misguided use of pesticides

(NEWSER) - Don’t let the bedbugs bite—but if they do, don’t panic. While the creatures themselves aren’t known to cause much more than itching, the chemicals used to get rid of them have been linked to 111 illnesses and a death between 2003 and 2010, a CDC study finds. Some 64 of the reports came from New York City, though the CDC could get data from only seven states. The numbers of cases are thankfully small, investigators found: “At this point, it's not a major public health problem.” More»

(NEWSER) - Three new studies suggest that pregnant women exposed to pesticides have kids with lower average IQs, reports USA Today . But let's not be too alarmist about applying these findings, cautions the Los Angeles Times . Along those lines, one of the study's lead authors offers this takeaway message for pregnant women: Don't stop eating fruits and veggies, but make sure you wash them or buy organic. More»
