(NEWSER) - Nigeria's Kano state is worried: The number of divorces appears to be skyrocketing. And a divorced woman there faces a raft of problems—she may be shunned, in some cases forced to beg or prostitute herself to support her family. So the state government is taking the matter into its own hands: It's working to find husbands for 1,000 divorcees and widows, the Los Angeles Times reports. (NEWSER) - Divorcees looking for a little advice (or the company of formerly married peeps) are heading over to the so-called divorce expo in New York today, the New York Times reports. “We’re putting a positive face on divorce,” says Francine Baras, co-founder of Start Over Smart—which costs $75 and up at the Metropolitan Pavilion this weekend. (NEWSER) - Living together before getting hitched no longer spells doom for married couples, says a new government study. In the late '60s, a mere 10% of American couples shared a place before marriage, and their divorce rates were higher, writes AP . Now, around 60% of couples move in together before tying the knot, and if they get engaged, their divorce rate is comparable to couples who didn't live together first. "It's becoming so common, it's not surprising it no longer negatively affects marital stability," says an expert at Bowling Green. More»

(NEWSER) - If you think divorce is a tragic way to end an 18-day marriage , how about divorce as an end to a 77-year marriage? An Italian couple—he 99, she 96—are calling it quits after the husband discovered that his wife had an affair ... in the 1940s. The Telegraph reports that just before Christmas, "Antonio C" stumbled upon letters in a drawer that "Rosa C" wrote to her lover. She admitted to the affair, but her pleas that he reconsider apparently fell on deaf ears. The two, who have five kids, a dozen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, are set to become the world's oldest divorcees. Gingrich said Jackie wasn't 'young enough': old friend

(NEWSER) - More bad news for Newt on the marriage front: Looks like his version of his first divorce doesn't quite add up. Court papers show that he divorced Jackie Gingrich 13 years ago, and not the other way around, as his website contends . "The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken," his divorce complaint read—at a time when he was seeing a 28-year-old congressional aide who later became his second wife. Jackie Gingrich's petition said that "she does not desire [a divorce] at this time." More»
