(NEWSER) - The record high temperatures in March resulted in maple syrup that one syrup distributor refers to as simply “yucky,” and total syrup output in the US fell as much as 40%, Reuters reports. "It was kind of a disaster," the company owner says with regard to the 2012 season. Sugar maple trees require freezing temperatures at night in order to continue producing sap, so this year many of them either dried up early or produced the aforementioned “yucky” syrup. More»

(NEWSER) - Roofs are being ripped off and residents are seeking higher ground today as Alaska’s western coast is pummeled by a storm the likes of which hasn't been seen since 1974. In Nome, which is bearing the brunt of the severe weather, water is pooling at the base of buildings, one meteorologist tells the AP . More than a foot of snow, near-hurricane-like winds, flooding...

(NEWSER) - The mother of all storms is headed for Alaska. Forecasters says more than a foot of snow could be dumped on the state's western coast ... and that's not all. Near hurricane-strength winds will churn up the Bering Sea, producing seas as high as 25 feet, which are expected to cause serious flooding along the coast. Drought to continue in Texas, Gulf Coast

(AP) - Winter looks to be cold and wet across the northern tier of states, and the drought will worsen in the South, where conditions are expected to be warmer and drier than usual, government forecasters said today. Like last winter, the Pacific Ocean cooling known as La Nina is affecting the weather, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Mike Halpert, deputy director of the agency's Climate Prediction Center, said snowfall probably will top the usual amounts from the Northwest to the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Tennessee river valleys. July Broke, Tied 2,676 Heat Records

At its worst, heat wave scorched 32 states last month

(NEWSER) - If you live anywhere in the "eastern two-thirds of the United States," you may have noticed that last month was hot. Really hot. So hot that high temperatures broke or tied 2,676 records, which is nearly twice the number from the same period last year, according to the National Weather Service. The heat wave "has been relentless," says an NWS rep, even in areas like Maine, Minnesota, and Wisconsin that don't typically deal with severe heat. More»
