Iran Begins Loading Nuke Reactor Core

Country's first nuclear plant set to supply power by 2011

(NEWSER) - Iran has moved a step closer to bringing its first nuclear reactor online, according to officials. State media reports that fuel rods have been loaded into the core of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran. The Iranian government says the plant—hit by delays including a leak and a malware infestation —will be providing power by early next year, CNN reports. The US withdrew its opposition to the plant after receiving assurances from Russia, which is supplying the fuel, that no nuclear material will be diverted from the project. More»

(NEWSER) - Iran isn’t interested in nuclear weapons, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proclaimed in a speech today, but will pursue its nuclear energy program despite international pressure. “No wise nation would be interested in making a nuclear weapon today,” said Iran’s supreme leader. “They are against rational thought.” Just days ago the UN’s atomic watchdog group expressed “serious concern” about Iran’s nuclear programs including work in warheads, and urged “full disclosure.” More»
