(NEWSER) - Tennessee was the site of the infamous Scopes monkey trial nearly 90 years ago (spoiler alert: creationists lost), but the state is still fighting evolution. Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said yesterday he'll allow a bill to become law that protects teachers who criticize evolution, as well as global warming and other science orthodoxies, reports AP . Haslam had earlier said he would sign the bill, which takes effect April 20, but now he says he will simply let it take effect without his signature. More»

Biologists take the opportunity to show kids science is 'cool'

(NEWSER) - How to celebrate "Darwin Day" in rural America? Very carefully, the New York Times reports: When evolutionary biologists set out on a road trip this weekend to Virginia, Nebraska, Montana, and Iowa to promote science in honor of Charles Darwin's 202nd birthday, one high school principal made sure to send out permission slips (two parents opted out). A museum vice president only publicized the event to teachers, not the community at large. Even so, the intended audience—students—seemed to deem the events a success: One 10th-grader blogged that the scientists "told it like it is." More»

(NEWSER) - A candidate for Alabama governor is fighting back against an ad that accuses him of supporting evolution and believing the Bible is "only partially true." Bradley Byrne says the ad is filled with "despicable lies:" "As a Christian and as a public servant, I have never wavered in my belief that this world and everything in it is a masterpiece created by the hands of God," Byrne said. "As a member of the Alabama Board of Education, the record clearly shows that I fought to ensure the teaching of creationism in our school text books." More»

Townies support creationist teacher's 'religious rights'

(NEWSER) - A cross burned into the arm of an Ohio schoolboy by his creationist science teacher has sparked a three-year battle pitting neighbor against neighbor over the role of religion in public schools. An army of supporters is backing the teacher, who is still fighting his firing from the Mount Vernon middle school. They claim the conflict is an issue of religious rights and that the teacher was fired for being devout. "If he'd had a Koran on his desk he wouldn't have had a problem," said teacher John Freshwater's Pentacostal pastor. More»
