(NEWSER) - An Italian lawyer today called Amanda Knox a “she-devil” for her role in falsely incriminating his client, Patrick Lumumba, in the murder of Meredith Kercher. In early statements to police, Knox said she sat terrified while Lumumba murdered her roommate. Knox appears “angelic,” Lumumba’s lawyer Carlo Pacelli said, but, he asked: "Who is the real Amanda Knox? Is it the one we see before us her, all soap and water purity? (NEWSER) - Italian prosecutors pulled out all the stops in closing arguments at the Amanda Knox murder trial, telling the court that the American exchange student killed Meredith Kercher in "an unstoppable crescendo of violence." The chief prosecutor restated his argument that Knox murdered her roommate out of spite because Kercher disapproved of her lifestyle: "She had harbored hatred for Meredith, and that was the time when it could explode," he told the court. The defamation suit is seeking $500,000 after Julie Anne Smith allegedly accused the "creepy" church of "indoctrination," reports the Raw Story . "Don’t waste your precious lives and relationships being held emotionally/spiritually captive by this so-called church," Smith wrote, alleging that the pastor knew of a sex offender in the church but had done nothing to protect kids. HarperCollins snags rights after auction

(NEWSER) - After a days-long bidding war, HarperCollins has obtained the rights to Amanda Knox's memoir in a $4 million deal, insiders tell the New York Times . Divisions of Random House, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and Penguin all reportedly bid on the book, which Knox says will be based in part on the journal she kept in prison. Lawyer Robert Barnett, who has represented other big-name authors such as Sarah Palin, was behind the deal. More»
