Alerts issued after malware infects another payment processor

(NEWSER) - MasterCard is investigating a feared security breach linked to a credit-card processor in the US, it says; Visa has reportedly launched a similar investigation. While the companies are mum about the extent of the problem, financial insiders tell Krebs on Security it's "massive," potentially involving 10 million cards. MasterCard says it has notified law enforcement as well as issuing banks about "certain MasterCard accounts that are potentially at risk," the Wall Street Journal reports. Hannaford grocery stores report 1,800 related fraud cases

(NEWSER) - A data security breach at Hannaford, an East Coast supermarket chain, has exposed the credit card information of 4.2 million customers and resulted in 1,800 cases of fraud so far, the Boston Globe reports. The breach, which went undetected for three months, is one of the largest ever, the AP notes. Hannaford, which also runs Sweetbay supermarkets, says no names or personal information got out, just account numbers of credit and debit cards. More»

Customer names, Social Security numbers reportedly safe

(NEWSER) - Visa has made credit card processor Global Payments persona non grata after some 1.5 million numbers were breached in a massive hack announced Friday , and the New York Times notes that the figure could be as high as 3 million. Global Payments has been removed from Visa's list of "compliant service providers," and Visa is also calling for renewed certification of Global Payments' security compliance. MasterCard is waiting on an independent investigation before taking action against the card processor, the Wall Street Journal reports. More»

(NEWSER) - Some computers and other electronic imports are packed with malware before they're even out of the box, a congressional expert on cybersecurity warns. Hackers overseas planning cyber attacks are planting bad codes in components headed for the US, Rep. Jim Langevin tells Reuters . "Corrupting hardware and software is embedded in the supply chain. We have a real challenge on our hands to better secure the supply chain," says Langevin, sponsor of the Executive Cyberspace Coordination Act of 2011. More»

(NEWSER) - The millions of apps available online have greatly expanded smartphones' capabilities—but at the price of security, cybercrime experts say. Google, Research in Motion, and Apple have all had to pull malicious or deceptive applications from their stores, but not before some had already been downloaded by scores of users, the Wall Street Journal reports.
