Sarcastically claps, draws finger across throat

(NEWSER) - The war crimes trial for Ratko Mladic opened today in the Hague, and the Bosnian Serb general once again made no attempt to appear sympathetic. He gave a thumbs-up and slowly clapped his hands sarcastically as the trial began, waving and smirking at the rows of survivors and relatives of victims in the Hague courtroom. At one point, he even drew a finger across his throat. The Guardian claims the motion was his odd way of calling for a bathroom break, but Reuters calls it a "gesture of defiance" that was made while Mladic stared at a Muslim woman. (NEWSER) - The UN's tribunal in the Hague has acquitted a former commander of the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army of all charges of war crimes. Ramush Haradinaj, who also briefly served as the breakaway province's prime minister, was cleared of murder, persecution, rape and torture of Kosovo Serb civilians. (NEWSER) - Serbia has arrested the last of its indicted war criminals, Goran Hadzic. Hadzic, president of the de facto government of Serb territories that broke away in former Yugoslavia, was in hiding for seven years. With his arrest, all 161 people indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for alleged war crimes during the 1991-1999 wars have been accounted for—clearing the way for Serbia to join the European Union. Kosovan Mass Grave Unearthed in Serbia

Site contains bodies of ethnic Albanians

(NEWSER) - The bodies of hundreds of people believed to be ethnic Albanian victims of atrocities in the late '90s have been found buried under a parking lot in Serbia. The site near the Kosovan border is believed to contain the bodies of 250 Kosovo Albanians, according to Serbian authorities. The bodies—buried at a site belonging to a state-owned road company—were found after a tip-off to war crimes investigators, the Guardian reports. More»
