(NEWSER) - In the latest unkind cut in parenting battles, startling Wisconsin health ads are warning moms and dads that sleeping with their babies is the same as leaving a butcher knife next to them. The Milwaukee horror campaign against family "co-sleeping" reveals dozing babes cuddled next to knives almost as big as they are. "Is it shocking?" asked city Health Commissioner Bevan Baker. "Yes, but what is even more shocking is that 30 developed and underdeveloped countries have better" infant death rates than Milwaukee. A 7-week-old baby died the day the campaign was launched, the ninth infant to die in the city while sleeping with a parent in a year, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. More»

Babysitter, Baby Boy Missing

Dad left son in care of 'friend of a friend'

(NEWSER) - Baltimore cops are seeking a 16-year-old babysitter and a baby boy in her charge who have been missing for three days. "Put my baby somewhere safe and call somebody. He's probably hungry," the baby's tearful mom pleaded at a support rally yesterday. "It's a 7-month-old baby—you got to have some kind of heart." The baby's dad left his son in the care of Janae Boozer, a "friend of a friend" who stopped by to borrow a cigarette, and he left to buy some at a store, he told police. The teen's belongings and a half-finished baby bottle were left behind when the two vanished, reports the Baltimore Sun . "It's a shame you can't trust people these days," said a neighbor, clutching the hand of his daughter. More»

Toronto couple hopes to avoid society's stereotypes

(NEWSER) - A Toronto couple is taking their beliefs about parenting and gender stereotypes to new heights: They refuse to tell people the gender of 4-month-old Storm, reports the Toronto Star . Even the kid's grandparents are in the dark. “In fact, in not telling the gender of my precious baby, I am saying to the world, ‘Please can you just let Storm discover for him/herself what s(he) wants to be?!” writes mom Kathy Witterick. The decision has generated a storm of criticism, especially after the Star story appeared, most of which can be boiled down to the assertion that Witterick and husband David Stocker are going to seriously mess up their kid because of misguided beliefs. Mom Tries to Flush Newborn Down Airplane Toilet

Baby critical, mother busted

(NEWSER) - An Indian woman gave birth to a baby in a tiny airplane bathroom, the tried to flush the newborn down the toilet, authorities said. The baby was discovered stuck when the plane landed, and the entire toilet was removed and rushed, with the newborn, to a local hospital. The baby is in critical condition. The mother, a 22-year-old unmarried medical student, has been arrested, reports the Telegraph . More»

Mom insists baby isn't smoking, but still...

(NEWSER) - Forget that baby who smokes cigarettes —this one smokes a bong, at least if an ill-advised Facebook photo is to be believed. Florida’s child protection agency is investigating the family of the 11-month-old shown in the picture, WJXT reports. A spokesperson says they are “alarmed that any parent would take pictures of their child next to what is obviously drug paraphernalia.” More»
