Newspaper lays groundwork for reinstituting paywall

(NEWSER) - Two-plus years after making its entire website free, the New York Times is about to roll out a plan that will charge readers for online access. The announcement may come within 2 weeks, but the pay wall won't be in force for several months, New York magazine reports. Rather than charging for everything or for predetermined categories of content, the paper will use a "metered" system similar to the one the Financial Times employs, allowing free access to a certain number of articles before requiring payment. A better way to go non-profit would be for the press to declare itself a religion, writes Stephen Bates for Slate. The tax benefits would be substantial, as would legal protections for reporters-turned-priests, and Bates notes that the earliest American journalists were men of the cloth, who would review the week’s events in sermons. Christian Science Monitor Will End Daily Print Edition

Paper moves to web-first edition, will publish weekly magazine

(NEWSER) - The Christian Science Monitor will discontinue its daily print edition in April as it shifts to the Internet. The paper, which turns 100 next month, will print a weekly edition instead. The Monitor has seen its circulation decline to 52,000 from 160,000 20 years ago, and while it is subsidized by the Christian Science church, the financial losses have become too much to bear, notes Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post.
