(NEWSER) - Poor Lynndie England. The female soldier linked to shocking abuse at the infamous Abu Ghraib military prison remains steadfastly unremorseful about what happened, and apparently believes the prisoners ended up faring better than she has. Prisoners' "lives are better. They got the better end of the deal,” Lynndie England tells the Daily from her parents' home in West Virginia. “They weren’t innocent. They’re trying to kill us, and you want me to apologize to them? It’s like saying sorry to the enemy.” England served more than 500 days in a military prison and was dishonorably discharged for her part in the physical and psychological abuse of prisoners in the facility near Baghdad. Discussions with Baghdad 'are ongoing': spokesman

(NEWSER) - The Pentagon threw cold water on a story today that US troops are leaving Iraq by year's end, MSNBC reports. "Suggestions that a final decision has been reached about our training relationship with the Iraqi government are wrong," a Pentagon spokesman said. "Those discussions are ongoing." Earlier, the AP reported that Washington failed to renew its security agreement with Baghdad, and would pull out its 41,000 troops by Jan. 1 as planned. More»

12K Iraqis Killed by Suicide Bombs

Roughly 1K bombings also account for 30K civilian injuries

(NEWSER) - Suicide bombs have killed more than 12,000 Iraqi civilians and wounded another 30,000 since the war started in March of 2003, according to a new study. The numbers account for 11% of the 108,624 civilian deaths and 26% of the 117,165 civilian injuries, but aren't considered final because accurate data on casualties is hard to come by. "Not every death or injury is reported, or linked to a suicide bombing as a cause," said the study. More»

Cable from UN demanded answers, got no reply

(NEWSER) - In 2006, a group of US soldiers burst into a house in Ishaqi, Iraq, where they handcuffed and executed at least 10 people—including an infant and four other children, none older than five years old—then called an airstrike to cover up the evidence. Or at least that’s the conclusion a UN investigator reached, according to an unclassified diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks last week. The cable contains questions for US authorities, which they appear to have never answered, the investigator tells the McClatchy Newspapers . More»

(NEWSER) - The real cost of American military action in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan dwarfs the $1.3 trillion appropriated on Capitol Hill, according to a study by Brown University's nonpartisan Eisenhower Research Project. The study estimates that the war bills already paid or obligated to be paid are at least $3.2 trillion and probably closer to $4 trillion, with the bulk of the spending buried in a variety of budgets and invisible to taxpayers, reports Reuters .
