(NEWSER) - Greece's major unions launched a 48-hour general strike today, protesting the latest austerity cuts designed to appease international creditors. Thousands of people poured into the streets of Athens, the AP reports, and demonstrations occasionally got ugly; outside of Parliament, dozens of youths hurled fire bombs and stones at police, who responded by firing tear gas. So far no arrests or injuries have been reported. About 7,000 took part in that protest, according to police, while a separate Communist demonstration drew 10,000. More»

But some say renewed subsidies fall short

(NEWSER) - Strikes that shut down Nigeria's economy last week are off—at least temporarily—after the country's president announced new fuel subsidies. President Goodluck Jonathan has slashed fuel prices by a third to 97 naira per liter, or $2.27 per gallon, after they more than doubled Jan. 1, when earlier subsidies ended. The new subsidy still leaves prices 50% higher than they were before the new year, and though unions have suspended strikes, some doubt remains that they could resume, Reuters reports. More»

Hyatt Turns Heat Lamps on Above Picketers

(NEWSER) - Things got extra heated during an employee strike outside a Hyatt hotel in Chicago yesterday, when a manager turned on 10 heat lamps that were hanging above picketers—and left them on for nearly an hour, reports the Chicago Tribune . "This is one of the hottest days of the summer," said a Park Hyatt bellman. "I work at that door every single day and only in winter time do those need to be turned on. It's ridiculous." (AP) - French riot police forced open a strategic fuel refinery today that had been a bastion of resistance to President Sarkozy's bid to raise the retirement age to 62, pushing striking workers aside with shields in a bid to end gasoline shortages. The operation came as the French Senate prepared to vote on a pension reform at the heart of the unions' anger, after the government short-circuited a protracted debate. More»
