US Nuclear Sub, Ship Collide in Strait of Hormuz

(NEWSER) - The Navy discovered cheating so widespread among one of its nuclear submarine crews that it fired the commander of the USS Memphis and 10% of its crew, according to a report obtained by the AP . Sailors were emailed the answers before qualification exams and openly asked their officers for answer keys, the probe found. (NEWSER) - A Japanese mini-sub believed to have played a crucial role in the battle of Pearl Harbor has been found. The mini-sub was one of five deployed during the 1941 attack from larger “mother” submarines, University of Hawaii researchers say. The other four have already been found, but the fifth is the only one that successfully deployed its torpedoes—it is believed to have sunk USS Oklahoma with a torpedo 68 years ago today. (NEWSER) - US Navy investigators are pinning blame for the March collision between a nuclear-powered submarine and another Navy ship on lax atmosphere and “weak” command aboard the USS Hartford, where sailors slept while they were supposed to be on watch, and the radio room was rigged up with music speakers.
