4 Oakland Cops Shot, Critically Injured

(NEWSER) - The man responsible for the deaths of four Oakland police officers over the weekend had an extensive criminal history, the Tribune reports. Lovelle Mixon, 26, spent 5 years in prison for a 2002 assault with a firearm. After he was paroled, he was a suspect in a 2007 murder; though police couldn’t make the case, he was sent back to prison for parole violations. More»

(NEWSER) - Three Oakland police officers were shot to death today and a fourth is on life support after two separate incidents with the same man, the Oakland Tribune reports. The first two officers, both motorcycle cops, were shot and killed about 1:15pm after making a traffic stop. The suspect fled on foot, and police tracked him down about two hours later. Ex-officer surrendered on suspicion of murder

(NEWSER) - The transit officer who fatally shot an unarmed man on New Year's Day, sparking San Francisco-area riots, was arrested last night in Nevada on suspicion of murder, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Sources say Johannes Mehserle, 27, had fled California after receiving death threats in the wake of Oscar Grant's death. Mehserle resigned last week rather than answer investigators’ questions. Man appears to have killed 9-year-old son

(NEWSER) - Police are still sorting out what happened at a Florida RV park last night, after a standoff that left three people dead and two others badly hurt. Police got a call about a shooting at the park just before 6:30pm, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel . When they arrived, they found a man lying outside an RV. But before they could get close, a man inside the RV said he had a woman hostage, and would kill her if they approached. More»

City prepares for general strike

(NEWSER) - A city panel is launching a formal investigation into Oakland police following the wounding of an Iraq veteran in last week’s clash with Occupy Oakland protesters . The inquiry, sparked by a complaint to the Citizens’ Police Review Board, is due to begin within days and run “several months,” an insider says. An Occupy rep called the investigation a “wonderful thing,” the Guardian reports. More»
