(NEWSER) - Two locomotive engineers and a trainee were killed when a train derailed in Burlington, Ontario. Another railway worker and 45 passengers were injured when the train, headed to Toronto from Niagara Falls, came off the rails in an industrial district, the Toronto Star reports. The accident happened in good weather on a straight stretch of track and investigators say it could take a long time to establish the cause. More»

Hyatt Turns Heat Lamps on Above Picketers

(NEWSER) - Things got extra heated during an employee strike outside a Hyatt hotel in Chicago yesterday, when a manager turned on 10 heat lamps that were hanging above picketers—and left them on for nearly an hour, reports the Chicago Tribune . "This is one of the hottest days of the summer," said a Park Hyatt bellman. "I work at that door every single day and only in winter time do those need to be turned on. It's ridiculous." Frustrated travelers camp out in airports, train stations

(NEWSER) - Hundreds of thousands of passengers on their way to family holiday festivities in Europe were camped out instead yesterday at mobbed airports and train stations shut down by record snow and cold. London's Heathrow Airport was largely closed for a second day as wanna-be fliers huddled under emergency blankets on trash-strewn floors, some of them for a third night waiting for their plane to take off. "It's very hard," a passenger with a ticket to Dallas told CNN . "All I want for Christmas is to hug my daughter." Ohio, Wisconsin Spurn $1.2B to Build Train Lines

Stimulus funds will go to other states

(NEWSER) - The US is redistributing $1.2 billion in federal stimulus money that had been headed to Ohio and Wisconsin, after both states' Republican governors-elect called for an end to proposed train projects, arguing they were unnecessary and would cost millions to operate. “Wisconsin taxpayers were victorious today in defeating this project,” said incoming Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, who had argued the train line would be unpopular and would cost the state about $7.5 million a year.
