Proposal would correct vast crack/cocaine sentencing gap

(NEWSER) - Eric Holder today told the US Sentencing Commission that he supports a proposal to release thousands of federal prisoners convicted on crack-related offenses. Until Congress changed them last year, federal sentencing guidelines gave crack users—who are predominantly poor and black—much harsher sentences than powder cocaine users. Paterson Fined $62K for Freebie Series Tickets

(NEWSER) - David Paterson had better save his pennies: New York's soon-to-be unemployed governor has been slapped with a $62,125 fine for taking five free tickets to last year's World Series. Paterson maintains he always intended to pay for the tickets—though he didn't quite get around to it until the New York Post started snooping around—but the state's Commission on Public Integrity wasn't buying, reports the New York Times. The Yanks, the commission notes, have “myriad and continuing” issues in front of Albany, creating one of those pesky conflicts of interest. More»

(AP) - Last month, the Northeast was smothered by blizzards. Now, it's waterlogged by torrential rains. The region mopped up today following a weekend storm complete with high wind and heavy rains that uprooted trees, downed power lines, and flooded some creeks and rivers. Five people died in storm-related accidents, and hundreds of thousands in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut lost electricity at the peak of the storm, which carried wind gusts of up to 70 mph.
