Guardian says will stop the presses after 188 years

(Newser) – After 188 years in print, the celebrated UK newspaper the Guardian is switching to a Twitter-only format, it said in today's April 1 edition. All news, the paper said, will appear in 140-character “tweets,” which “experts say” is enough for any story.... Read full story »

(NEWSER) - Sad news from one of America's great newspapers: The New Orleans Times-Picayune has announced that it will cease daily publication this fall. The paper, founded as the Picayune in 1837, will now offer print editions just three days a week, on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, while continuing to offer daily reporting online at Nola.com, reports the Washington Post . In $142M deal

(AP) - Billionaire Warren Buffett's company is making its largest foray into newspapers yet, agreeing to buy 63 papers from Media General Inc. The $142 million deal includes the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal. The company is selling all its papers except those in Tampa, most importantly the Tampa Tribune. Media General says it is in talks with others for those papers. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has owned the Buffalo News for decades and recently bought its hometown paper , the Omaha World-Herald. Paper aims to firm up pay barrier before launch

(NEWSER) - The pay barrier for the New York Times' online content goes up on Monday and the newspaper is scrambling to make it more like a wall and less like a curtain full of holes. Users will be allowed 20 page views a month before the barrier comes down. But articles linked to from Twitter and Facebook can be viewed independent of the limit, leaving a huge loophole that the Times is now seeking to plug. More»
