(NEWSER) - The attorney general made the surprising move of suspending the deportation of a gay man in a civil union with a US citizen yesterday. The AP reports that Holder has asked the Board of Immigration Appeals to reconsider its decision. The board had called for the deportation of Paul Wilson Dorman to Ireland, even though he celebrated a civil union in New Jersey with his male partner—because the Defense of Marriage Act blocks gay marriage. Holder says there are two key points: Would the deportation would still occur if DOMA didn’t exist, and is Dorman officially a “spouse” according to New Jersey state law? More»

62% of US Backs Same-Sex Unions

And younger generation is much more likely to support gay marriage: poll

(NEWSER) - Nearly two-thirds of Americans support same-sex unions, though not necessarily marriage, a new CBS News /New York Times poll finds. While 38% of respondents said gay couples should be allowed to marry, another 24% said they should be granted legal rights via civil unions, for a grand total of 62% who back same-sex unions. Some 33% said same-sex couples should not be legally recognized at all. More»

North Carolina Approves Ban on Gay Marriage

Amendment to state's constitution passes

(NEWSER) - North Carolina will make a ban on gay marriage part of its state constitution. Voters tonight approved a measure that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, reports AP . The state already has a law against gay marriage, but legislators wanted to make sure it couldn't get struck down by judges, notes the New York Times . North Carolina will be the 31st state to adopt such an amendment and the last one in the South to do so, adds the Raleigh News & Observer . Incomplete results had the measure up by about 60% to 40%. Judge Strikes Down Defense of Marriage Act

He says it's unconstitutional, orders administration to cease enforcing it

(NEWSER) - A federal judge has declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, ordering the federal government to provide health benefits to the wife of a lesbian court employee. It's the first ruling to come down on DOMA since the Obama administration decided to stop defending it in court , the LA Times points out. The law has instead been defended by the House 's Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group—which, despite its name, is predominantly conservative. More»

President endorses bill to kill act

(NEWSER) - President Obama's " evolving views " on gay marriage appear to have evolved even further: The president has endorsed a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act , which defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, is thought unlikely to pass Congress this year, but is facing its first Senate committee hearing today, the New York Times reports. More»
