(NEWSER) - A task force spearheaded by the Justice Department recommends that 50 of the 196 detainees at Guantanamo Bay be held indefinitely without trial. Justice Department clears detainee for transfer to unknown country

(NEWSER) - A Yemeni doctor held at Guantanamo Bay since 2002 has been cleared for transfer abroad as part of the administration's review of prisoner cases, reports CNN. Justice Department officials say the hard part now will be to find a country willing to take him. The Bush administration once claimed the physician had taken part in an anthrax program of Al Qaeda, but he was never charged with any crime. US appeal of ruling strands 17, held since 2001 without charge

(NEWSER) - 17 Chinese prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay will stay there indefinitely pending an appeal of a judge’s decision that they be released, the Guardian reports. “They were on freedom's doorstep," their frustrated lawyer said. “The plane was at Gitmo.” Refugee and religious organizations in the US have offered to take the men in. They were captured by Pakistani troops in Afghanistan in 2001 and turned over to the US, but they have never been charged with any crimes. More»

Gitmo Doctors Covered Up Torture: Study

Doctors didn't inquire, despite evidence of physical, mental abuse

(NEWSER) - The Defense Department doctors and psychologists who tended to Guantanamo Bay detainees were complicit in covering up their torture, according to a new study released yesterday. Medical records and legal files reveal that the doctors saw evidence of bone fractures, contusions, and lacerations; heard stories of rape; and saw signs of PTSD in previously mentally healthy individuals; but didn’t inquire about any of it, according to the AFP . One doctor even told a detainee “to relax when the guards are being more aggressive.” More»
