(AP) - A tornado tore through a city northeast of Japan's capital today, killing one person, injuring dozens of others, and destroying scores of houses. Firefighters and medical teams rushed to the area after the tornado struck Tsukuba city, 40 miles from Tokyo. The city is a science center, with dozens of research and academic institutes, but the tornado appeared to mostly hit residential areas. More»

Kansas, Oklahoma warned of 'life-threatening' weather

(AP) - More than a dozen possible tornadoes were reported today as forecasters warned residents across the nation's midsection to brace for "life-threatening" weather. An apparent tornado took down barns, outbuildings, and large trees in southeast Nebraska, and Johnson County emergency director Clint Strayhorn said he was still trying to determine how long the twister was on the ground and how much damage it did. "I'm on a 2-mile stretch that this thing is on the ground and I haven't even gotten to the end of it yet," he said as he walked the path of destruction near the Johnson-Nemaha county line. More»

It's 'amazing' no one was killed amid massive destruction, he says

(NEWSER) - Eighteen-wheelers were sent spinning though the air , hundreds of homes were smashed and cars crunched when as many as 13 tornadoes hit the Dallas region —but "miraculously" not a single person lost their lives, said a stunned mayor. "It looks like the Dallas-Fort Worth area really dodged a bullet," Mayor Michael Rawlings told CNN . "We've got hundreds and hundreds of homes destroyed, but amazingly no fatalities. We're looking at a miracle here. We're looking at something amazing." Added Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm: "Thank God for the protection he provided." More»

(NEWSER) - About a dozen injuries have been reported so far from the swarm of tornadoes that hit Dallas today, with at least two of the victims "severely" hurt, reports AP . Hundreds of flights were canceled at the Dallas airport, and more than 100 planes were damaged by hail.
