(NEWSER) - It's not a good news day for consumers of chicken or their eggs: Nicholas Kristof digs into findings out today, courtesy of the Humane Society, spawned from yet another undercover investigation into factory farms. The target of this one: Kreider Farms, which pumps out 4.5 million eggs daily. Among the revelations, per the undercover worker: The manure pits found below some barns produce so much ammonia it's tough to breathe; mice scurry along conveyor belts; hens get accidentally decapitated by a feeding cart and are often left to rot; oh, and salmonella has been found in that manure. A&L Poultry apologizes for leaving chickens on farm

(NEWSER) - An animal rights group is seeking criminal charges after officials discovered nearly 50,000 dying chickens abandoned on an egg farm near Modesto, Calif., MSNBC reports via the Modesto Bee . Most of the birds were euthanized due to illness, but about 2,000 are being treated at sanctuaries and will be available for adoption. A&L Poultry, which owned the abandoned egg farm, apologized for leaving the hens behind. More»

Calif. School First to Ban Dissections in Software Deal

Students to use free anatomy software instead of frogs

(NEWSER) - A California high school has put down its scalpels and become the first school in the nation to accept a software offer from an animal rights group. Rancho Verde High School will drop frog dissections in exchange for free "Digital Frog" anatomy software provided by the Animal Welfare Institute and the Save the Frogs organization. The groups have offered anatomy software licenses, worth nearly $900 each, to the first 25 schools that agree to give up dissections for five years, reports AP. Rancho Verde went for the deal to save money, according to the principal. More»
