Obama Seeks $83.4B for Wars

(NEWSER) - President Obama has had to change his tune a few times since he took office, but the content of his speech to Congress tonight will be no surprise, Michael Scherer writes in Time. Talking points have been consistent for long enough to predict 5 key features:

• I'm not Bush: In case Congress didn't notice, Obama will emphasize particularly his break from the former president's "deception" as regards the budget—and the helicopters.

First look at proposed 2011 budget shows sharp break between haves and have-nots

(NEWSER) - President Obama delivered his proposed 2011 budget to Congress today, and the Washington Post drills down to find the winners and losers. Winners first:

• K-12 education: The Department of Education's budget will increase by 6%, or $3 billion.
• Research: The proposal pumps up the Energy Department's budget 7%, or $2 billion, and the National Science Foundation's budget climbs 8%.
• The military: The Defense Department's budget rises 3.4%, and that's not counting spending on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

The Dow is up more than 2,600 points, at least

(NEWSER) - President Obama is about to celebrate—maybe that's not the right term—one year in office, and the AP takes a look at some numbers that have defined his inaugural turn around the sun.

• The Dow: Perhaps the only clear victory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen from 7,949.09 on Jan. 20, 2009, to close at 10,609.65 on Friday.
• Unemployment: 13 million adults were out of work when Obama took office. That number is now 14.7 million.

After 'yearlong drift,' Obama can't keep passing buck to Bush

Bush, and on Monday he did it again, referring to the “long years of drift in Afghanistan.” He must be trying to “explain away his own, well, yearlong drift on Afghanistan,” writes Charles Krauthammer . New prez is doing fine in Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, but no one notices

(NEWSER) - Despite the howls of protest over President Obama's Nobel Prize and the administration’s "dithering" on Afghanistan , the fact is that the new president’s foreign endeavors deserve good marks, says Juan Cole. Cole gives Obama an A for his Iranian statesmanship, a B for pulling out of Iraq as promised—albeit coordinating poorly with the Iraqis—and a B for making Pakistan own “the problem of the Pakistani Taliban.” Not bad for eight months.
