"In 38 years of this commission's existence, this is one of the three worst projects that I've seen in terms of environmental devastation," says the coastal commission director. Arctic Ozone Took 40% Hit This Winter

Up from previous record of 30%

(NEWSER) - The ozone layer above the Arctic withered by 40% this winter, according to the UN's weather agency, a stark increase from the previous seasonal record of 30%. The loss was driven largely by frigid conditions in the stratosphere—though surface temperatures were actually warmer than normal—and lingering chemicals banned in 1987's Montreal Protocol. "The 2011 ozone loss shows that we have to remain vigilant and keep a close eye on the situation in the Arctic in the coming years," the secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization says. (NEWSER) - While climate legislation flounders in Congress, California is taking the lead: Air regulators there voted yesterday to cap industrial greenhouse gas emissions and instate the first carbon-trading program of its size in the US, the Los Angeles Times reports. “Most political people said we should do as little as possible as slowly as possible” because of the economy, said an official. (NEWSER) - The Gulf oil spill will affect all living things in the area—but determining what those consequences will be is stumping the best minds in environmental science. There's never been an oil spill of the magnitude of the Deepwater Horizon accident on the ocean floor, and data is scarce on the effect the submerged slick will have. "This is a three-dimensional spill," one oceanographer tells the Wall Street Journal . "The physics, the chemistry and the biology action are very different when you have oil released from below."
