Rejection of survival plan means GM may go into bankruptcy as Chrysler emerges

(NEWSER) - The Obama administration is preparing to steer General Motors into bankruptcy next week, sources tell the Washington Post. The restructuring plan, which aims to shrink GM and turn it into a globally competitive automaker, will bring the company an extra $30 billion in federal loans, for a total of $45 billion in government aid. (NEWSER) - The man tabbed by President Obama to see General Motors and Chrysler through bankruptcy is leaving the post, the New York Times reports. Though Steven Rattner’s former investment firm is under investigation, it’s unclear if that affected his decision. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said today that, with both auto giants emerging from bankruptcy, Rattner is leaving to spend more time with family. (NEWSER) - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg today put a temporary stay on the sale of Chrysler to Italian automaker Fiat, SCOTUSBlog reports. Ginsburg’s motion allows the justices to further consider the matter, and either postpone the sale or let it go forward. A full postponement of the sale would require five judges to agree. (AP) - United Auto Workers members have ratified a package of concessions designed to reduce General Motors' labor costs. Union president Ron Gettelfinger said today 74% of GM's production and skilled-trade workers voted in favor. The vote comes before the company's expected Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing Monday. Bankruptcy experts say having an agreement in place before the filing will help move the process through court more quickly. More»
