(NEWSER) - Britain's Supreme Court has upheld the extradition of Julian Assange to Sweden to answer accusations of rape and sexual assault by two WikiLeaks volunteers. The British court rejected in a 5-2 vote Assange's claim that a European arrest warrant seeking his extradition was invalid because it was issued by a prosecutor, not a judge or a court as required in Britain. Assange can still appeal the decision to the European Court of Human Rights. If the court agrees to hear his case within 14 days, he can file for an injunction to suspend the extradition process, reports MSNBC . More»

Spain's Queen Sofia Snubs Brit Jubilee Over Gibraltar

Nations in dispute now over fishing rights

(NEWSER) - Spain's Queen Sofia is dumping her planned trip to Britain to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee in a long-simmering snit over Gibraltar. It's "hardly appropriate" for Sofia, 73, to attend lunch at Windsor Castle tomorrow in light of the two nations' tensions over the territory, noted a statement from the Spanish government. Spain and the UK are currently bickering about fishing rights off Gibraltar, a territory ruled by Britain since 1713, but which is also claimed by Spain. More»

Hoffman Saves Heart Attack Jogger

Actor spots young runner keel over in Hyde Park

(NEWSER) - Dustin Hoffman has joined the ranks of celebs who save lives. He was walking in London's Hyde Park when he spotted a jogger first stagger, then keel over, frothing at the mouth. He immediately called the emergency Brit number—999—and stayed as paramedics performed CPR on Sam Dempster, 27. As paramedics hoisted the revived runner into an ambulance, Hoffman told them: "Great job, guys," reports the Sun . Dempster, who's on the mend, says he has "no memory of what happened. The paramedics told me. It’s unbelievable. I want to say ‘Thank you’ to Dustin Hoffman. He saved my life." More»
