With no swine to eat garbage, waste piles up on city streets

(NEWSER) - When the Egyptian government decided to kill all of Cairo’s pigs last spring in a pre-emptive measure to combat swine flu, they apparently forgot that the pigs performed a vital function in a city with poor public services: eating trash, the New York Times reports. The zabaleen, Cairo’s Christian minority, used to collect trash door-to-door, selling recyclables and feeding the organic waste to their pigs. With all their pigs dead, the zabaleen leave the trash, which now overflows in the streets. More»

Egypt Delays School Opening to Combat Swine Flu

Fear of outbreak motivates rescheduling

(NEWSER) - Fears of a swine flu outbreak have moved the Egyptian government to delay the start of the school year at state-run schools and universities by at least 1 week, the BBC reports. Government-run schools had been set to begin school the last week of September; they will now open Oct. 3. Schools and universities not run by the state have already begun their school years and will have to interrupt their schedules to comply with the order. More»

H1N1 virus likely arose among jet-setting humans

(NEWSER) - The humble porker shouldn't be the one taking the blame for the H1N1 virus, scientists tell the Los Angeles Times. Pigs provided some of the raw material for the virus, experts say, but so did birds and humans. The most likely incubators and spreaders of the virus, according to scientists, were jet-setting humans whose bodies mixed and matched different strains of flu. More»
