(NEWSER) - A US Army sergeant was sentenced to five years in jail on Friday for his role in the infamous "Kill Team" of soldiers, who committed war crimes while serving in Afghanistan, reports the New York Daily News . David Bram, the eleventh soldier convicted of crimes related to the Kill Team, was found guilty on seven of nine charges, including solicitation to commit murder, conspiracy to commit assault, and attempting to thwart the investigation into the killing of innocent Afghans. (NEWSER) - US troops in Afghanistan marked Memorial Day with the words of a fallen comrade—one of at least 1,851 Americans to have died in the war. Marine Gen. John Allen, the leading US commander in Afghanistan, read a letter penned by Marine Sgt. William Stacey, killed by homemade explosives in January at age 23. The letter to Stacey's family reflected on his reasons for fighting in case he died. More»

(NEWSER) - Army Specialist Moises J. Gonzalez left a pretty complicated personal life behind when he died in a vehicle accident in Afghanistan last month. After his death, the woman that Gonzalez, 29, married in 2010 discovered that he hadn't divorced the woman he married in 2003, MSNBC reports. The two women, each of whom bore Gonzalez a son, sat in the front row at his funeral earlier this week—as did a third woman who also had a son by Gonzalez. The second wife complained that the military didn't inform her of Gonzalez's death, and that the first wife will receive survivor benefits—and the flag from his casket. More»

Another Marine wounded in Helmand province attack

(AP) - An Afghan soldier has killed one US Marine and wounded another before being shot to death in return fire in southern Afghanistan in the latest in a series of attacks against foreigners blamed on government forces working with coalition troops. Yesterday's attack in Helmand province was among nearly 20 this year that have raised the level of mistrust between the US-led coalition and their Afghan partners as NATO gears up to hand over security to local forces ahead of a 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops. In another sign of deteriorating security, the US has abandoned plans to open a consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif after spending $80 million on the project. More»

Organs From US Troops Save Lives in Europe

Donations from mortally wounded troops have helped 140

(NEWSER) - Since 2006, organ donations from mortally wounded US troops have saved around 140 European lives, reports USA Today . The families of 36 American servicemembers who were declared brain dead from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan agreed to donate their hearts, kidneys, lungs, livers, and pancreases to patients in Europe. It's the result of military protocol: Wounded troops wind up at an Army medical center in Germany, and those who are brain dead are kept alive on a ventilator to give their families in the US time to fly in for a final goodbye.
