(NEWSER) - A dazzling 110-carat yellow diamond has fetched $12.3 million at a Sotheby's auction, a record for a diamond of its kind, and the eighth-highest price ever paid for a diamond. The gem, named the Sun-Drop, was found in South Africa last year and given the "fancy, vivid yellow" grading, the highest possible for its color, the BBC reports. (NEWSER) - An extremely rare, flawless blue diamond ring is going on auction today in Hong Kong and is expected to fetch a shimmering $5.8 million . The 5.16-carat gem is one of 12 diamonds originally from the DeBeers Millennium collection, displayed in London to celebrate the new century. The pear-shaped diamond is the first of the collection to be auctioned and is known as "fancy vivid," the highest grade for a color diamond. More»

(NEWSER) - The diamond Marie de Medici wore when she was crowned queen of France in 1610 has been sold at auction in Geneva for an eye-popping $9.7 million. The 35-carat pear-shaped "Beau Sancy" diamond has been passed down by royal families through the centuries. The buyer is anonymous, reports the BBC . "It's extremely rare for a diamond of this importance to come on the market," said a Sotheby's spokesman. "It's never been out of royal hands, it's of immaculate provenance, and it's in all the history books of famous stones." The diamond was pawned by Mary Stuart to fund the fight by her brother, the future Charles II, for the English throne. It was later the centerpiece in the crown of the first king of Prussia. More»

(NEWSER) - The sale of Elizabeth Taylor's legendary gem collection shattered records—and estimates—at Christie's in New York last night. Amid competition so fierce that bids sometimes jumped by a million dollars, the $116 million sale of the late star's gems broke the world record for a private collection of jewels along with six other records, including the price for a pearl, Forbes reports.
