(NEWSER) - The world’s second-richest man, Mexican media tycoon Carlos Slim, has purchased a 6.4% stake in the New York Times Company. He says the buy was a purely financial—not strategic—move, but analysts say he may be positioning himself to make a play for the Gray Lady, reports Bloomberg. A Slim spokesman describes the struggling newspaper company as a “an attractive value,” adding, "The door is always open to assess whether we will buy more.'' More»

(NEWSER) - The New York Times’ long-expected paywall is due next month, and details are starting to leak out about the plan. Everyone will have limited free access to the site, sources tell the Wall Street Journal , but once users reach that limit, they'll have to pony up. Users can buy either a subscription to just the site, or a digital bundle that also includes the Times’ iPad app. Subscribers to the physical paper will have full access to the website. More»

(NEWSER) - If you want to read the New York Times online, it's going to cost you—but not for everything and not until next year. The Times confirmed its planned paywall today, but execs “could not yet answer fundamental questions about the plan.” The Times will allow users to read a certain number of stories for free each month, then charge a flat fee for further unlimited access. But the company isn’t yet sure how much it’ll charge, or how many free articles readers will get. More»

(NEWSER) - Daily newspaper circulation has taken a massive 10.6% drop over the past six months, the Audit Bureau of Circulations said today, while Sunday circulation fell 7.4%. The drop, one of the worst ever, is a potent sign of the industry’s decline, Editor & Publisher reports. Things were especially bad at the USA Today, where circulation is down 17%, knocking the once-top-ranked newspaper down below the Wall Street Journal. More»
