(NEWSER) - After Kazakhstan's Maria Dmitrienko won gold at the Arab Shooting Championships, she mounted the podium to hear her national anthem played. Problem was, Kuwaiti officials used the obscene spoof version from the Borat movie, reports the Telegraph . (Sample lyric: "Kazakhstan's prostitutes cleanest in the region.") They swear it was an honest mistake. Dmitrienko was a good sport about it, and officials redid the ceremony with the correct anthem in place. (NEWSER) - Female politicians in four other states are joining Ohio and Georgia representatives in a bid to crack down on men's sexual and reproductive freedoms, including access to Viagra and vasectomies. It's their way of striking back against restrictive state abortion laws and attacks on health insurance coverage for birth control. An Oklahoma amendment demands that semen only be deposited in a woman's vagina. Not to comply would be "interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child," reports NPR . More»

Accused Soldier Flown Out of Afghanistan

Massacre suspect moved to 'appropriate detention facilities' in Kuwait

(NEWSER) - The American soldier accused of massacring 16 Afghan civilians in a pre-dawn shooting spree has been flown to Kuwait, angering Afghans who want him to stand trial in their country. He was whisked out of Afghanistan because of "our own policies and regulations, and for his own safety and security, and to be appropriately available to investigators," said a Pentagon spokesman. "We had to move him to appropriate detention facilities." The 38-year-old soldier's identity is being withheld until charges are filed. More»

(NEWSER) - Members of the Arab League signaled this week that they're about to arm Syrian rebels. But American officials fear that strategy will thwart their more cautious approach, and could fuel a bloody, protracted civil war. Saudi Arabia and Qatar aim to aid the opposition "as soon as they can," said a source, while Kuwait's parliament has called on the government to provide rebels with weapons. “People are more and more frustrated, and are coming to the conclusion that diplomatic efforts are not enough in light of continuing abuse by the regime," an Arab diplomat tells the Washington Post .
