(NEWSER) - The New York Mets' owners have avoided a trial over what they knew about Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme by settling today with the trustee for Madoff victims for $162 million, the New York Times reports. Trustee Irving Picard had sued Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz for $1 billion (later knocked down to $386 million), saying they disregarded warnings about Madoff's dealings; they claimed ignorance. Much of the $162 million will be balanced by money Katz and Wilpon will receive as "net losers" from the scheme themselves. More»

FDA to Rule on BPA Ban by March

Agency agrees to deadline as part of lawsuit settlement

(NEWSER) - The FDA will finally make a firm decision about whether to ban BPA by March 31, thanks to a lawsuit settlement. The Natural Resources Defense Council called on the agency to ban the controversial chemical in 2008, but the FDA didn't take action within the time required by law; that prompted the NRDC's suit, the Washington Post reports. The US is spending $30 million to investigate the reported harmful effects of the chemical. More»

'Christmas Quality, Hanukkah Pricing' slogan angers ADL

(NEWSER) - A New York City billboard selling cheap vodka with the slogan "Christmas Quality, Hanukkah Pricing" was taken down after a flood of complaints, including one from the Anti-Defamation League. "In a crude and offensive way of trying to make a point that their vodka is high quality and inexpensive, the billboards evoke a Jewish holiday to imply something that is cheap and of lesser value when compared to the higher value of a Christian holiday," complained the ADL's regional director, saying the ad "reinforces anti-Semitic stereotypes." Dov Charney accused of forcing sex on young employee

(NEWSER) - A former employee has accused American Apparel's founder of turning her into a sex slave, and is suing him for $250 million—more than triple what the company is worth. Irene Morales, now 20, alleges that Dov Charney began sexually harassing her when she was 17 and ordered her to come to his apartment when she turned 18. The suit alleges Charney kept her prisoner for hours and forced her to perform numerous sexual acts, reports the New York Post. More»
