(NEWSER) - Jay Leno has created a bit of an international brouhaha over a joke that's not sitting well with India's Sikh community. The Tonight Show last week displayed a picture of the holiest Sikh temple—the stunning Golden Temple of Amritsar—before Leno called it Mitt Romney's summer home. Sikhs have organized an online petition calling for Leno's "racist comments" to "be stopped right here," and an Indian official says the country's embassy plans to discuss the comment with the US State Department, the BBC reports. 21 Dead in Nigeria Religious Riots

Violence has spanned almost a week

(AP) - Religious rioting in the troubled central Nigeria city of Jos has killed at least 21 people in recent days, as authorities seem to be unable to curb the rising violence. An AP journalist counted the bodies awaiting burial at the city's central mosque today. Doctors at a university hospital collected at least 12 bodies bearing gunshot and machete wounds; another 82 people were wounded in fighting in the city, said a hospital boss. It is unclear if the 12 dead at the hospital were included among the dead collected at the mosque. More»

Indian Anti-Graft Crusader Freed to Start Hunger Strike

Tens of thousands rally in support of Anna Hazare

(NEWSER) - Indian authorities, facing huge protests in cities and towns across the country, have backed down and agreed to allow anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare to begin a 15-day hunger strike. The 74-year-old activist was arrested along with at least a thousand supporters Tuesday. Despite an order for his release, he had refused to leave jail until authorities lifted conditions they had imposed on his proposed hunger strike, reports the New York Times . More»
