Secretary of State cites concerns over hunger-striking journalist's health

31-year-old imprisoned for buying bottle of wine

(NEWSER) - Iran will soon free Roxana Saberi, a journalist imprisoned more than a month ago, Reuters reports. Saberi was jailed after buying a bottle of wine, but held on concerns over her working papers. Tehran said its investigation is finished and that the 31-year old Iranian-American’s release is imminent, but the government's response may have mostly come from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s demand yesterday that Saberi be freed immediately. (NEWSER) - Roxana Saberi tells NPR that she falsely confessed to being a spy because she was under "severe psychological and mental pressure" from Iranian authorities. Saberi says she wasn't physically tortured in prison, but she was subjected to hours of interrogation and threatened with a 20-year prison sentence or execution if she didn't confess. She did so, then recanted, and quickly got sentenced to 8 years anyway. Saberi's back in the US now after a judge modified the sentence. More»
