Falling revenues behind expected 40% plunge

(NEWSER) - The latest news from Wall Street is likely to leave most ordinary Americans dry-eyed. Year-end bonuses for bankers and traders are expected to be down sharply this year, plunging up to 40% to their lowest level since the financial crisis, according to a closely watched industry forecast. A bond trader who is also a managing director at a top securities firm would have received a bonus of some $2.9 million last year, but will have to make do with $1.8 million this year, the Wall Street Journal reports. (NEWSER) - For many seniors at elite US universities, Wall Street provides a straightforward path to a job—particularly since big banks often dominate campus recruiting. But recently, fellow students and staff alike have urged graduating classes to consider a wider array of options, the Los Angeles Times reports. A nationwide campaign called “Stop the Brain Drain” is collecting student signatures to support altering campus recruiting, while professors and administrators are setting up programs to encourage seniors to expand their focus. Obama, DNC pulling in more cash ... even from firm Romney founded

(NEWSER) - Despite his moves to tighten regulation of the financial sector, President Obama has more Wall Street money in his war chest than all of the Republican hopefuls combined, the Washington Post finds. Obama's campaign has received $3.9 million in donations from employees of financial firms, compared with $7.5 million for Mitt Romney. But as president, Obama can also include Democratic National Committee donations, which brings his total up to $11.7 million. Rick Perry has received $2 million from financial workers, Jon Huntsman $401,000, Ron Paul $289,000, and Herman Cain only $129,000. More»

Madoff: I'm a 'Human Piñata'

Thinks he doesn't deserve to die in prison

(NEWSER) - There are probably at least a few former investors who wish this was literal: Bernie Madoff says the judge in his Ponzi scheme trial made him the "human piñata of Wall Street" when he dished out a 150-year sentence. Madoff tells the New York Times Judge Denny Chin's ruling was excessive. "Maybe the judge felt, ‘Well, he’s 70 years old, so even if I give him 20 years, he’s going to be 90 years old,’" says Madoff. “But quite frankly, there’s a big difference with dying in prison, you know, and dying outside with your family."
