(NEWSER) - An Abraham Lincoln researcher has confessed to changing the date on a Lincoln document, effectively altering history for his own gain, AOL News reports. Thomas Lowry changed the date from April 14, 1864, to 1865—the date of Lincoln's assassination—so that it would seem he’d discovered one of Lincoln’s last official documents. The Civil War death toll of 618,222—360,222 from the North and 258,000 Southerners—has been in history books for more than a century. But J. David Hacker, working with newly digitized 19th-century census data, believes it was closer to 750,000, reports the New York Times . Virginia could overtake North Carolina in number of soldier deaths

(NEWSER) - With the 150th anniversary of the Civil War approaching, North Carolina and Virginia have commissioned official recounts of how many soldiers each state lost in battle. What sounds like a humdrum exercise is producing surprising results, reports the Wall Street Journal : North Carolina has long laid claim to losing the most men in uniform: 40,275, according to the 1866 count. (NEWSER) - When 8-year-old George Patten was mocked by classmates in 1861 who didn't believe he'd met Abraham Lincoln, his teacher wrote to the president seeking to expose the boy's tall tale. Lincoln instead sent the boy a letter confirming that they had met the previous year. That document, believed to be the only surviving letter written by Lincoln to a child, is being sold by a Philadelphia dealer in for $60,000, the BBC reports. More»
