(NEWSER) - A plan to turn homeless people into 4G hotspots has digitalphiles at the SXSW Interactive Conference in Austin crying "exploitive" and "dystopian." In a nutshell, a marketing company wants homeless people to carry MiFi devices that would enable passersby to get online when their carrier service won't suffice, the Houston Chronicle reports. Customers who use the hotspot would fork over what they can—a couple of dollars, say. But would this help the homeless, or callously turn them into human modems? More»

Courts in various countries have declared it so, but the UN stopped short, calling the Internet "an indispensable tool for realizing a range of human rights." (NEWSER) - He faces far more serious charges, but this is a start: Hosni Mubarak has been fined $34 million for blocking Egypt's nation's Internet and mobile phone networks during protests in January, reports the BBC . Two other former high-ranking officials got hit with similar fines. The unprecedented action by Egypt's administrative court is the first legal ruling against the imprisoned former leader. He could get the death penalty if convicted of ordering the killing of protesters. More»

Coffee shops shouldn't feel like cubicle farms, say owners

(NEWSER) - California's coffee shops were pioneers in providing free WiFi, but a growing number are starting to pull the plug. Some complain that laptop users taking up space and nursing a single drink all day are killing profits, while others want to keep a friendly vibe in their establishments by having customers spend their time talking, not typing. Owners say they've received plenty of compliments from customers happy to have a space where they won't get distracted by the Internet. More»
