(NEWSER) - Prohibition came off the books in 1933, and the liquor flowed again. But a swath of the US, concentrated mainly in the South, remains booze-free to this day by law. More than 200 dry counties exist in the country, along with plenty more that are partially dry. Now the bleak economy is encouraging many of the US' last teetotalers to rethink their ban on alcohol in order to lift local commerce, reports the BBC . Homeless Man 'Reopens' Shut-Down Bar, Sells Beer

California transient broke in and sold his six-pack, for starters

(USER SUBMITTED) - Valencia Club is a Northern California bar that lost its liquor license and shut down—until a 29-year-old homeless man decided to take it upon himself to reopen the doors and run the place as if it were his own. Police say Travis Kevie broke in on the 16th, put up an "open" sign, and made his first sale with a six-pack he bought across the street.
