Mets’ Owners Settle Madoff Case for $162M

(NEWSER) - The New York Mets' owners have avoided a trial over what they knew about Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme by settling today with the trustee for Madoff victims for $162 million, the New York Times reports. Trustee Irving Picard had sued Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz for $1 billion (later knocked down to $386 million), saying they disregarded warnings about Madoff's dealings; they claimed ignorance. Much of the $162 million will be balanced by money Katz and Wilpon will receive as "net losers" from the scheme themselves. More»

8 More Accuse Red Sox Staffer of Sex Abuse

Each seeks $5M over attacks by former clubhouse boss

(NEWSER) - Eight more men have claimed abuse by a Boston Red Sox clubhouse boss in what the Boston Globe is calling "the worst sexual abuse scandal in Major League Baseball history." The men—among them two former Baltimore Orioles batboys—join two ex-clubhouse attendants who recently filed a lawsuit against the Sox , saying they'd been sexually molested by Donald Fitzpatrick, now deceased. With the statute of limitations for legal action expired, each of the latest accusers wants $5 million in damages from the teams, the AP reports. More»

The questions are at the heart of a lawsuit in South Carolina, report AP and the New York Times : An online tech review firm is suing a former employee who ran a company Twitter account. When Noah Kravitz left PhoneDog, he changed the name on the account and kept its 17,000 followers. The company says Kravitz owes it $2.50 per follower over 8 months, amounting to $340,000. More»

(NEWSER) - The New York Mets’ two owners, along with their businesses and families, made some $300 million in fictitious profits from Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme—putting them among its top beneficiaries, says a lawsuit unsealed today. The Mets withdrew some $90 million from the team’s 16 accounts with Madoff, and the money was used for “day-to-day” expenses, the Wall Street Journal reports. More»
