(NEWSER) - PETA's controversial campaigns for animal rights dominate headlines—but behind the scenes, the picture is quite different, according to newly released documents. Last year, the organization killed more than 95% of the pets in its charge at its Norfolk, Va., headquarters, the Daily Caller reports. Documents released by the state's agriculture department show that the group placed 24 animals in 2011—and killed 1,911. More»

PETA Sees Benefit to US Horse Slaughter

It's better than exporting them, group says

(NEWSER) - Congress’ new spending bill ending an effective ban on domestic horse slaughter may sound like a custom-made PETA target—but actually, the group sees some good in the change, the Los Angeles Times reports. Activists say it’s better to allow the slaughter of horses inside the US than to export them for slaughter. “To reduce suffering, there should be a ban on the export of live horses, even if that means opening slaughterhouses in the US again,” the group says in a statement. PETA Sues SeaWorld for Whale 'Slaves'

Says their treatment violates 13th amendment

(NEWSER) - Never known for half-measures , PETA is suing SeaWorld—for violating the 13th Amendment. You know, the one that outlawed slavery. In a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of killer whales Tilikum, Katina, Corky, Kasatka, and Ulises, the animal rights group contends that SeaWorld keeps its orcas in conditions that violate their constitutional rights. “By any definition, these orcas are slaves—kidnapped from their homes, kept confined, denied everything that's natural to them, and forced to perform tricks for SeaWorld's profit,” says PETA’s general counsel. (NEWSER) - A Seattle bar has ended its weekly goldfish races after PETA unleashed its fury—but other hangouts “are saying screw you to the PETA folks,” says the bar owner halting the practice. What, you ask, is a goldfish race? It means plopping fish into plastic tubes of water, then propelling them to the finish line by blowing in a straw or firing a water pistol, reports Seattle Weekly .
