(NEWSER) - Searchers have found 12 bodies at the site of a Russian plane crash on an Indonesian volcano. The jet had been carrying 45; all are believed dead, the AP reports. The steep mountainside has proved a challenge to searchers, who climbed through a jungle toward the plane's wreckage using ropes. Rescuers are clearing trees in order to make room for helicopters to land; choppers haven't been able to retrieve the bodies thanks to a blanket of fog and the jagged, near-vertical slopes. More»

Russian Jet Vanishes Mid-Flight

(NEWSER) - A Russian Sukhoi SuperJet-100 disappeared during a demonstration flight in Indonesia today, vanishing from radar screens while it was still at high altitudes and failing to land at its appointed time. The plane was last heard from when it requested, and was granted, permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet, Russia Today reports. Indonesian officials say it may have crashed—there's a 6,200-foot-tall mountain in the area—or it may have been hijacked. More»

12 Survive Siberia Plane Crash

Turboprop plane goes down shortly after takeoff, killing 31

(NEWSER) - At least 31 people were killed when a Russian plane carrying 43 passengers and crew members crashed in Siberia this morning. The ATR-72 turboprop plane owned by UTair had just left Tyumen on a flight north to the oil town of Surget when it went down. The cause is unknown. Twelve people were airlifted to hospitals, and at least five of them were critically injured, reports the BBC . Russia has experienced an extraordinary number of air accidents. Last year the nation witnessed a 53% increase in crashes and a fourfold boost in deaths in civilian planes alone. Fifteen planes crashed, killing 120 people in 2011. More»

With skies safe, officials turn their attention to 'surface threats' on runways

(NEWSER) - "America's skies are the safest they have ever been," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters this week, and the stats back him up: Deaths from accidents in US commercial aviation have plummeted over the last 15 years, with none registered at all in 2011. Aviation officials say they are now turning their attention toward somewhere potentially much deadlier than the skies for commercial aircraft: the ground, and specifically, the runway. More»

Series of deadly crashes blamed on lax regulation

(NEWSER) - Russia is now, mile for mile, the deadliest place in the world to fly, the Wall Street Journal finds. Nine fatal crashes—including one that killed an entire professional hockey team —have claimed a total of 140 lives. While eight of the crashes involved old Soviet-era aircraft, experts say the real problem in the former aerospace superpower is the sloppiness, risk-taking, and ineffective regulation more commonly associated with aviation basket cases like the Congo.
