4 Tons of Marijuana Pulled From Ocean

About 160 bales found floating off California coast

(NEWSER) - What a find: After receiving a tip yesterday, Harbor Patrol agents in California pulled about 160 bales of marijuana from the ocean off the coast of Orange County. That's more than 7,263 pounds, and agents say the street value is $3.6 million, CBS 2 reports. The marijuana, which was floating at least 15 miles off shore with no boat in sight, was turned over to US Border Patrol. The investigation into how exactly it got there is continuing, the Orange County Register reports. A Border Patrol rep calls the situation an odd one, noting that bales are usually dumped by boats that are being chased. More»

Suspected Teen Rape Victim Jailed

'She's a victim, not a criminal,' says her lawyer

(NEWSER) - A 17-year-old suspected rape victim is being held in a California juvenile detention facility to ensure that she'll show up to testify against her attacker. She failed to turn up at a preliminary hearing for her suspected assailant, forcing prosecutors to refile the case. “The last thing we ever want to do is put a victim or a witness in custody, but when you have serious crimes of violence and multiple offenses, you have to balance the protection of the community,” Sacramento County assistant district attorney tells ABC News. Skier Critically Injured in Tahoe Avalanche

Ski partner flees for help

(NEWSER) - Rescuers found a critically injured skier trapped in an avalanche yesterday near a Lake Tahoe ski resort. The unidentified man was one of a group of three skiing in northern California back country near the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort when the avalanche hit. One of the skiers was able to flee for help. The injured skier was trapped in rugged terrain that was difficult for rescuers to reach, reports the Sacramento Bee. The man has been taken to a local hospital. Homeless Killer Suspect Accused of 2 More Murders

Itzcoatl Ocampo to be charged with stabbing Raquel Estrada, Juan Herrera

(NEWSER) - Authorities believe Itzcoatl Ocampo, the 23-year-old Iraq veteran charged with stabbing four homeless men to death in California, also killed two other people—ones that he knew. Ocampo will be charged today with the murders of Raquel Estrada, 53, and her 34-year-old son, Juan Herrera, the mother and brother of a friend Ocampo has known since high school. That friend, Eder Herrera, had originally been charged with the murders, but those charges were dropped Friday, CNN reports. More»
