(NEWSER) - In a first major attack on an American firm, members of a Mexican drug cartel have torched five warehouses owned by a PepsiCo subsidiary. Masked men were witnessed hurling firebombs that incinerated the Sabritas potato chip warehouses and dozens of delivery trucks parked outside in the states of Michoacan and Guanajato. No one was injured in the attacks, reports ABC News . Men arrested in the firebombings said the aim was to extort protection money, according to the local attorney general. But there were also indications the firebombing may have been revenge by members of the Knights Templar cartel, who believe government authorities use the snack trucks to spy on the cartel. More»

(NEWSER) - The New York Times last month revealed that undercover US agents have laundered and smuggled millions of dollars for Mexico's drug cartels—and today the paper shines a light on one such operation, in which federal agents helped one drug trafficker and his Colombian supplier move cash and cocaine across international borders. Over a period of months in 2007, US and Mexican agents worked with that supplier—Harold Mauricio Poveda-Ortega, aka "The Rabbit"—who fed cocaine to cartel leader Arturo Beltran Levya, the New York Times reports. Too dangerous to cross the border in El Paso, officials warn

(NEWSER) - Notre Dame and Miami Hurricanes football players have been barred from crossing into Mexico while staying in El Paso for the Sun Bowl. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly even confiscated his team's passports before the Fighting Irish flew to Texas as a precaution, reports AP . Both teams met with police and FBI officials yesterday to learn of the dangers of a quick international foray. El Paso borders Ciudad Jaurez, which is engulfed in a vicious drug war that has claimed 3,000 lives this year alone. Fans have been warned of the dangers, too, leading up to Friday's face-off. More»
