Tennis star calls blood clot, hematoma 'extremely hard, disappointing'

(NEWSER) - Serena Williams' tennis career is on hold indefinitely following a series of health scares she calls "extremely hard ... and disappointing." News surfaced yesterday that Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism in February and then, more recently, a hematoma; she is now recuperating at home. But Williams has not played tennis since she won Wimbledon last summer, because shortly after that she stepped on broken glass and cut tendons in her right foot. Venus knocks losing shot into the net

(NEWSER) - In a massive upset, Venus and Serena Williams, the top seeded pair in the women's doubles at Wimbledon, were knocked out today by an unseeded duo from Russia. Vera Zvonareva and Elena Vesnina knocked out the sisters Williams 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, Reuters reports. It was Venus who hit the last shot into the net, and she's now out of the tournament entirely, after a surprise loss to Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria yesterday. More»

2009 runner-up exits after 5-set upset

(AP) - No. 5 seed Andy Roddick, last year's runner-up, lost in five sets to unseeded Yen-hsun Lu in the fourth round today at Wimbledon. Lu, 26, of Taiwan won 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 9-7 to reach the quarterfinals. He converted his only break point in the final set to secure the victory over Roddick in 4 hours, 36 minutes. The 70th-ranked 17-year-old, buoyed by the crowd's vocal support, demonstrated laser-like focus until the final shot, when she dropped her racket and clutched her head in shock, the New York Times reports.
