Refusal to allow firearms would cost system fed funds under bill

(NEWSER) - Amtrak passengers would be allowed to carry unloaded guns in locked containers in their checked baggage under a measure passed by the Senate yesterday, reports the New York Times. The rail corporation banned guns from checked baggage after the 9/11 attacks. The measure won the backing of all Senate Republicans and 27 Democrats, despite Amtrak's objection that it doesn't have the same ability to screen for firearms that airlines do. More»

Maryland Court Strikes Down Gun Control Law

Handgun permit system unconstitutional, judge decides

(NEWSER) - Maryland has no right to demand that residents explain why they need to carry a gun outside the home, a federal judge ruled yesterday, declaring the state's handgun permit system unconstitutional. The law required residents to provide a "good and substantial reason” to carry a gun, but "the right to bear arms is not limited to the home," the judge decided, saying that Maryland had created a rationing system by trying to limit the number of firearms outside homes. (NEWSER) - No time for church, but still want to observe Ash Wednesday today? A Cincinnati church has the answer for its harried faithful: A drive-thru. The Mt. Healthy Methodist Church will today offer up ashes and a blessing in its parking lot between 5 and 6pm, reports the Enquirer , and you don't even have to get out of your car. "We have two entrances and one exit,” says a reverend. “So we should be able to do this fairly quickly.” But you can't get fries with that, and the ash isn't totally free: Participants must take a church brochure and a Lent booklet. “It’s a drive-thru,” says the reverend. “Not a drive-by.” More»

Pastor Dumps Interracial Couple Ban

Brings issue to local church council

(NEWSER) - A Kentucky pastor has nullified a vote by his church to ban interracial couples , he says. “As far as I'm concerned and the church is concerned, this case will be closed as of tomorrow,” said Stacy Stepp on Saturday, after raising the issue with a council of local church leaders. The group ruled that the vote had no weight because parishioners hadn’t followed proper voting rules, ABC News reports.
