(NEWSER) - A tornado touched down near San Antonio yesterday, damaging roughly 50 homes and sweeping others away entirely, the National Weather Service has confirmed. The twister touched down about 25 miles southwest of the city and moved toward it, but never reached it, instead damaging mostly rural property, Reuters reports. The accompanying storm did leave roughly 23,000 San Antonio homes without power, however, and lightning strikes set at least two homes on fire. More»

Region could see 20 inches of rain

(NEWSER) - A tropical depression heading toward the Gulf Coast could soak the area in as much as 20 inches of rain, prompting concerns about flash floods in Louisiana, whose governor declared a state of emergency yesterday. What could become Tropical Storm Lee prompted warnings from Mississippi to Texas, the AP reports, with heavy rain expected over southern Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama through Sunday. More»

(NEWSER) - A new law signed by Rick Perry will allow hunters in Texas to rent a seat on a helicopter and hunt wild pigs from the sky. It may work for Perry politically, but the scheme is a short-sighted one that won't solve the growing problem of feral pigs destroying crops and wildlife, writes Mark Essig in the New York Times . For one thing, it's cruel because the pigs often end up being only wounded. What's more, it ignores the main cause of the problem—hunters are trapping and releasing pigs into new areas to create hunting grounds. More»

In Texas, Your Fish Tale Could Soon Be Illegal

(NEWSER) - Who doesn't love a good fish story? Apparently the Texas state Senate—at least when it comes to fishing tournaments. The Senate unanimously passed a bill that would make it illegal to lie about the size, weight, or provenance of a fish caught during a tournament, the New York Times reports. The bill is meant to address high-level cheating, such as the 2009 case of a man who won a $55,000 fishing boat by stuffing a one-pound weight inside a 10.49-pound bass's stomach. More»
