That's a view considered by philosopher Alva Noë, who on NPR notes that we seem to be partial to the idea that we aren't really the authors of what we do but function pretty much automatically, driven by a "neural zombie deep within" us. Noë concedes we may be driven by a kind of inner zombie, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Scientists Get Step Closer to Decoding Our Thoughts

Computers track brain activity as words are heard

(NEWSER) - Scientists have taken a big step toward being able to decode our thoughts. Researchers working with brain surgery patients taught computers to decipher the brain activity that takes place when words are heard. The brain, they found, breaks sounds down into their consistent acoustic frequencies. Using that computer model, they were then able to correctly guess which word volunteers had chosen from a list and were thinking of, the BBC reports. More»

(NEWSER) - General Motors is back on top of the world less than three years after its bankruptcy and restructuring. The company is once again the world's top-selling automaker, with 9 million sales worldwide in 2011, almost a million more than second-placed Volkswagen. Toyota, which took top spot from GM in 2008, fell into third place after production cuts caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and flooding in Thailand. More»

(NEWSER) - Americans may be worried about the economy, but they still need to get where they’re going. Auto sales beat expectations last month, rising 14% to 994,721, their fastest sales pace since August 2009, reports the AP . Chrysler led the pack: The automaker’s sales jumped 45%, Reuters reports. Close behind was Volkswagen, whose sales soared 41%; Hyundai, Nissan, and Ford also saw double-digit gains. More»

Awareness Detected in 'Vegetative' Patients

Study results could provide new hope for patients thought to be unresponsive

(NEWSER) - A new study could have a life-changing impact on patients thought to be in a “vegetative” state: Three such patients displayed signs of full consciousness in a simple test. “It sure looks as if there’s not just a little bit of consciousness but a lot” in these subjects, who had previously been deemed unresponsive, says a neuropsychologist who was not involved in the study. Sixteen supposedly “vegetative” patients were asked to imagine forming a fist or wiggling their toes when they heard a beep, and the brain activity for three of them showed “responses that were identical to healthy volunteers,” says the lead researcher.
