(NEWSER) - NASA thinks it's got a pretty solid estimate on the number of gigantic asteroids that could plausibly cause regional or global catastrophe by smashing into Earth: 4,700, give or take 1,500. Included in that number are all the rocks that exist, or which they suspect exist, that are larger than 330 feet across, and have orbits that pass within 5 million miles of Earth, Space.com reports. (NEWSER) - Looking for a career in asteroid mining ? Get in line. Celestial treasure-hunting firm Planetary Resources put out a call three weeks ago for applicants, and was soon so swamped with resumes that it had to stop accepting them. According to an update on the company's website , spotted by Space.com , it has received more than 2,000 applications, and hence has stopped looking for full-time employees. More»

Wizarding World in Osaka will be first outside US

(NEWSER) - Hogwarts is coming to Honshu. Universal Studios is planning to open a Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Osaka by late 2014, reports the Guardian . The park, like the one in Orlando and the one under construction in Hollywood, will feature rides, a Hogwarts castle, and a Hogsmeade village. The Orlando Potter attraction has boosted attendance at Universal Orlando by 68%, and demand is likely to be just as high at the park in Japan. More»

(NEWSER) - Henry David Thoreau lived at Walden Pond to escape the comforts of modern life; soon, you'll be able to share his experience right on your flat-screen TV. Thanks to a $40,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the University of Southern California is developing a video game based on Walden, Thoreau's account of his time at the pond, the Guardian reports. (NEWSER) - Anders Behring Breivik "trained" for his shooting massacre by playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, studying al-Qaeda, and reading bomb-making guides. The best-selling military game let him practice his shot using a "holographic aiming device," much like the one he used when slaughtering 69 people at a youth camp last summer, Breivik explained yesterday. "You develop target acquisition," he said. The court also heard that Breivik spent a year between summer 2006 and 2007 devoting 16 hours a day to playing World of Warcraft, the Guardian reports. Breivik described the fantasy game as a "hobby" that isolated him from the world. More»
