(NEWSER) - We earlier reported that 45 million Americans are currently on food stamps, and a new report out of the Congressional Budget Office puts that number in perspective: The number of food stamp users has jumped 70% since 2007, and shows no signs of stopping. The CBO expects it to rise for two more years. In 2007, the program cost $30 billion; the figure has risen to $72 billion, the Wall Street Journal reports, with the bulk of that spending increase due to the increased rolls. More»

Amanda Clayton just recently cut off after exposé

(NEWSER) - Amanda Clayton won the lottery in September, but despite her $1 million prize, she was still collecting $200 per month in food stamps until recently. Last night, the Michigan Department of Human Services confirmed that she has been removed from the welfare program, the Detroit News reports. "State assistance, our tax dollars, is meant to go to those who are truly in need," says state Rep. Dale Zorn. "It's not meant to go to those who won big in the lottery." A similar incident involving a $2 million payday occurred in 2010, and Zorn is now looking to make sure big lottery winners are taken off welfare programs. More»

(NEWSER) - Mitt Romney delivered yet another grade-A attack ad sound bite today, saying he was "not concerned about the very poor." In an interview with Soledad O'Brien this morning on CNN , Romney said he was in the race because "I care about Americans. I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there; if it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich, they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America." More»

President takes on rivals in interview, says he 'badly' wants to win

(NEWSER) - Barack Obama appears to be shifting into campaign mode. In an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC News last night, the president wasn't afraid to call out his would-be challengers by name, saying, "We've got a test of Mr. Romney or Mr. Gingrich or Mr. Santorum's theories. We tried it for 10 years. It resulted in a huge crash." He also directly took on Newt Gingrich's assertion that he is a " food stamp president ." More»
