Sure, the average 13- to 17-year-old sends and receives an insane 3,339 texts per month, but 45- to 54-year-olds are catching up with an average of 323 per month—a 75% increase from just one year ago, the Wall Street Journal reports. And our use of cell phones as, well, phones is down: The average number of monthly calls made by adults is down 25% from three years ago. More»

Supreme Court Backs Boss Who Read Employee Texts

Police chief has right to investigate on-the-job texting: justices

(NEWSER) - The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a police chief who read sexually explicit text messages on an officer's department-issued pager. In a 9-0 ruling, the court found that a police chief in Ontario, California, did not violate the 4th Amendment's ban against unreasonable searches. The chief been worried that his employees were wasting time on the job by using the text pagers for personal use. Because he read officer Jeff Quon's messages to satisfy an inquiry into work-related conduct, the court considers it a "reasonable" search, the LA Times reports. More»

'TigerText' iPhone App Bails Out Philanderers

App automatically deletes text—or sext—message trail

(NEWSER) - Tiger Woods probably wishes he’d had TigerText, a new iPhone app that automatically deletes sensitive text messages and cleans up cellphone call records. When a user sends a TigerText, it resides on the company’s servers. After the recipient reads the message, the system deletes it immediately, 5 days later, or anywhere in between. The inventor swears the name was in place before Woods’ recent troubles. More»
