(AP) - An Afghan soldier has killed one US Marine and wounded another before being shot to death in return fire in southern Afghanistan in the latest in a series of attacks against foreigners blamed on government forces working with coalition troops. Yesterday's attack in Helmand province was among nearly 20 this year that have raised the level of mistrust between the US-led coalition and their Afghan partners as NATO gears up to hand over security to local forces ahead of a 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops. In another sign of deteriorating security, the US has abandoned plans to open a consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif after spending $80 million on the project. More»

(NEWSER) - Even before today's attack on French troops , the number of deadly attacks on US and other coalition troops by Afghan soldiers was steadily rising. And while the military continues to describe the attacks as isolated incidents, a classified report obtained by the New York Times tells a very different story. "Lethal altercations are clearly not rare or isolated; they reflect a rapidly growing systemic homicide threat, a magnitude of which may be unprecedented between 'allies' in modern military history," states the report, which blames mutual dislike, not Taliban infiltrators, for most of the killings. McChrystal: US View of Afghan War 'Frighteningly Simplistic'

(NEWSER) - After a decade of fighting in Afghanistan, the US and its NATO allies are only "a little better than" halfway to meeting their war goals, Gen. Stanley McChrystal warns. The former commander of coalition forces says the slow progress is largely due to the US not knowing what it was getting into, AP reports."We didn't know enough and we still don't know enough," he says. "Most of us—me included—had a very superficial understanding of the situation and history, and we had a frighteningly simplistic view of recent history." More»
